Sony Xperia M Review

Overview

Good Entry-level Smartphone

Sony Xperia M is a budget phone by Sony. The phone does not have many features but can give you a decent smartphone experience.

Sony Xperia M Design and Build Quality

The phone has a 4-inch display and its dimensions are 124x62x9.3 mm and weighs 115grams. The weight of the phone is not much and it sits comfortably in the pocket. The phone’s built quality is average. The battery of the phone will last you for up to 9 hours with 3G operations. The phone has a very comfortable grip and does not slip from the hand.

User Interface and Comfort to Use Sony Xperia M

The phone runs on Android Jellybean software and has a 1GHz Qualcomm dual-core processor, 4GB of internal memory and 32GB of expandable storage. The latest Android UI is very comfortable to use and touch enabled. The phone’s screen resolution is 480x854, which is not very good but still very usable. Most of the colours are displayed easily but reading web pages and watching high-resolution videos is not a good experience on the phone.

Telephony and Phonebook

The phone supports both 2G and 3G operations. The call quality is average but the phone tends to drop calls when the conversations are long. The phonebook of the phone supports various features such as video calls, photo calling, Facebook, and other social media integration. It is easy to navigate and edit.

Messaging and Emails

SMS, MMS, Email and Push Email, and IM features are available on the phone.

Gallery, Photo Viewer and Video Player

The gallery of the phone is much updated and you can easily use the space to put in all your favourites. The photo viewer of the phone will let you crop and edit the photos easily. The video player on the phone supports all the popular formats. The playback is smooth and quick to respond. The display does not give a very good viewing experience but it is still passable.

Sony Xperia M Music Player and FM Radio

Music is one of the strong points of the phone. The phone has excellent audio quality. With additional features such as ClearAudio+, xLOUD and 3D Surround Sound the quality of music is further enhanced. The FM radio is simple and easy to use and works beautifully.

Sony Xperia M Camera and Image Quality

The camera on the phone is simple 5MP camera with the Sony Exmor RS sensor, which takes beautiful photographs. The low light photos also turn out quite good. However, the focus of the camera is not so good. The front camera is .3MP which is just enough for video calls and chats.

Video Camera and Video Quality

The high dynamic range (HDR) rear camera of the phone can record up to 720p, which is not full HD but still records decent videos that can be uploaded to sites.

Sony Xperia M Connectivity Options

The connectivity options on the phone include Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth, 3G, GPRS and Edge. The phone is also PlayStation enabled. DLAN has been made available on the phone. The phone also has the ability to connect to Sony TVs directly.

Organiser and Other Utility Tools

Various tools on the phone include Calculator, Calendar, Setup Wizard, Wallpaper Animation, Sony Entertainment Network, Manual Equaliser, 50 GB Free Cloud Storage, Auto Rotation, eCompass, Album Art, and office.

Web Browser and Applications

Default android browser on the phone is very fast but reading the text on websites can be little difficult. You will have to zoom in the screen to be able to read. The applications on the phone include Facebook, Google, Google Voice Search, Google Talk, Google Mail, Multiple Instant Messaging, YouTube, Twitter, and Google Play.

Google Maps and GPS

Phone supports A-GPS and comes with Google maps for navigation purposes.

Verdict

We will rate this phone a 3.8 star out of 5.
