Samsung Galaxy Young Review

Overview

Value for Money Android Smartphone for Youngsters

Overview of Samsung Galaxy Young

The Samsung Galaxy Young is a basic touch-screen Android phone, whose target market is younger users with limited budgets.

Samsung Galaxy Young Design and Build Quality

Available in metallic dark grey, the phone has changeable back covers in a variety of colors. It comes with the ubiquitous Galaxy styling, with the 3.27 inch touchscreen and a Home button flanked by menu and return touch keys. The small size also means it is comfortable to hold.

User Interface and Comfort to Use Samsung Galaxy Young

The phone has a 1 GHz processor and 768 MB RAM, running a Gingerbread Android operating system, which are low specifications that reflect its low price. It also runs the TouchWiz UI that enables a user to customize up to seven home screens. However, the touch screen is not very responsive and is generally fiddly due to its small size.

Telephony and Phonebook

The Galaxy Young’s phonebook has unlimited capacity and displays contacts stored in the phone memory, the SIM card or even a user’s Google account. Call reception is good, the sound quality is clear, and there is no dropping of calls.

Messaging and Emails

The Galaxy Young has unlimited message storage, with threaded view of conversations. The phone also provides MMS and subscription to RSS feeds.

Samsung Galaxy Young Gallery, Photo Viewer and Video Player

Lack of an ambient light sensor, small screen size and the low-resolution screen make for a poor photo viewing display, with images being visibly grainy. The phone uses the default Android video player, meaning that no enhancements are available.

Samsung Galaxy Young Music Player and FM radio

The phone’s music player is the same as that on higher-end Galaxy phones, and features 5.1 channel audio enhancements and equalizer presets. The sound quality is excellent from both speaker and headphones, while the inbuilt FM radio features RDS support.

Samsung Galaxy Young Camera and Image Quality

The phone’s 3.15 megapixel camera takes shots up to a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels, and features a geo-tagging feature. It, however, lacks a secondary camera.

Video Camera and Video Quality

The QVGA video camera is basic, as expected with the phone’s low specifications, and records video at a low 15 frames per second. This means that the videos are stuttery, and are at a resolution of only 160x120-pixels.

Samsung Galaxy Young Connectivity Options

The Samsung Young has a Bluetooth v3.0 adapter with A2DP, in addition to Wi-Fi with hotspot capability.

Organizer and Other Utility Tools

The phone includes generic Android apps for file handling, Tasks, Quick Office, Alarm, Calendar and a Download Manager.

Samsung Galaxy Young Web Browser and Applications

The stock browser found on the Galaxy Young renders web pages decently enough, but the small screen is cramped and the small on-screen keyboard is fiddly and difficult to use.

Google Maps and GPS

The phone provides A-GPS support and Google Maps, but the small, low-resolution screen is grainy and difficult to use.

Value for Money

The Galaxy Young retails at about INR 7350 (approx., may vary) with the switchable back covers available in various colors at Rs. 400 each. This represents good value for buyers of their first Android touch screen phone.

Verdict

The Galaxy Young does not break any new ground, and is a basic device with standard Android features and few extras. Heavy phone users might find it severely limited, but it is an adequate phone for entry-level buyers.
