Samsung Galaxy Star is a budget phone by the Android
marketplace ruler.
Weighing only 102 grams the phone is an attractive candy bar shaped
device. The phone has curved edges, which give it a very trendy look. The
phone’s dimensions are 58x104.95x11.9 mm. The phone fits
comfortably in the hand and is very easy to operate. The phone is
available in white and blue colours. The battery of the phone will last
you comfortably for 14 hours comfortably.
The phone runs on Android Jellybean software, which is the latest of
Android software. The phone has a comfortable 3 inch screen for
you to view the pictures and videos comfortably. The processor is 1 GHz
Cortex-A5 and the RAM is 512MB. The internal memory is 4GB. The memory can
be extended for up to 32GB using a memory card. The phone’s onscreen
keyboard fits comfortably on the screen and there is no lag in between
typing and the characters appearing on the screen.
The phone runs on 2G Dual SIM. Dual standby feature is
available on the phone. The call quality is above average. Since the phone
does not have 3G options, it does limit the phone capabilities. The
phonebook of the phone can store any number of contacts. You can add
pictures of the contacts and add email, address, and social media details.
The handset only supports MicroSIM and therefore you will have to get your
existing SIM cut in order to fit in the phone.
SMS, MMS, email, and Push IM are the features available on the phone. SMS
threaded view lets you view all the messages at once place.
The gallery and photo viewer of the phone are very basic. But you can get
more options from the marketplace easily. The video player supports 3G2,
3GP, H.263, H.264, MPEG4, MKV WebM formats. The small screen limits the
video viewing pleasure of the phone.
Music player on the phone is average. FM recording and stereo FM
sound is quite pleasurable on the phone. Music app is easy to use.
Recently listened songs are listed so that you don’t have to look for them
every time you restart the app.
The phone has a 2MP rear camera. The camera is very basic
and you can take some decent pictures with it but they are not the best.
The features of camera include Scene Mode, Shooting Mode, Effects,
Brightness, Timer, White Balance, Metering, and Image Editor.
You can use the rear camera to record videos but they are not good to be
used on PCs and TVs.
Connectivity options on the phone include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Micro USB,
Edge, and GPRS. The connectivity speed is quite good and we did not have
any problems in connecting to any network.
Calendar, Alarm, Clock and Calculator are the basic tools available on
the phone. The organiser is very simple. Other important features include
Wi-Fi Direct, S Planner, Voice Search, Security, Backup and Reset,
Blocking Mode, FOTA, World Clock, Stopwatch, Desk Clock, Data Usage, Bluetooth
Tethering, Text-to-speech Output, Shake to Update, Turn Over to
Mute, and Voice Input
Android browser on the phone is very good and responds quickly to hand
inputs. The screen size limits the browser window size. Inbuilt
applications on the phone include Samsung ChatON, Google, Notifications,
Google Play Store, Samsung Apps, YouTube, Vast Apps and Content
Storage, Gmail, Google+, Google Talk, Messenger, Widgets,
Samsung Kies, Instant Messaging, Bookmarks
The phone is priced at INR 5100 (approx., may vary) in the Indian market.
The phone’s price comes in budget range but the lack of a decent
camera, 3G and lack of ability to play some of the
games make the phone a pricey device.
We would rate this phone 3.5 out of 5.
