Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 fills the niche of big budget phones in the market.
The phone is very sleek and big. It will take some time for you to get used to such a large phone. In the jeans pocket you will feel a little bulge of the phone but you will soon get used to it. The phone has a nice glossy finish, which does not smudge easily. The battery of the phone will last you for a day at the most (the size eats the power). When having long phone conversations it gets a little uncomfortable to use.
The USP of this phone is it’s super large 6.3 inch display. The display has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The display is sharp and clear and we really did enjoy watching movies on the screen. The phone comes with 1.7GHz dual-core Krait processor and a 1.5 GB of RAM. There are two versions of the phone 8GB and 16GB. There is an external memory card provision. The phone comes with features like Air view, Dual view and Air watch which makes it very easy to use. It does not slip from the grip. Gaming on the phone is as much fun as you would want a mobile phone to be.
Call quality of the phone is very good but the speakerphone is not very loud. Bluetooth call connectivity is also very good. The phonebook of the phone has unlimited capacity. Social media contacts can be easily added to the phonebook and email, photo calling, and voice calling facilities are available.
SMS features on the phone are very basic. Email works well and you can use almost all the email features with ease.
Samsung has introduced a host of new features on the phone including the dual view, which makes it easier to access multiple windows and even copy paste. The photo viewer is very smooth and recognizes all the gestures. You can do some basic editing on the photos and there are a host of other options from the store that you can use. The video player is smooth and plays HD videos comfortably. It plays formats like XviD, MP4 and MKV, but DivX is not supported.
Music player supports all the music formats. The music quality of the phone is superb; playback from the recorded music can also be easily tweaked. The equalizer is easy to access and understand. Music can be sorted in terms of folders, artists, playlists etc. Music square rates your music according to your mood.
The camera is only 8MP and can take pictures up to 3264 x 2448 pixels. We wish that the camera had a little bit more features than the basic Auto Focus, Geo-tagging, Touch Focus, Face and Smile Detection, HDR Support, Image Editor and photo modes. Photos are impressive but not the best you will get from Samsung phones. The front camera is 2.0 MP, which is very impressive.
Videos camera can easily record 1080p videos. You can take photos while shooting videos, which does not make sense as you, can always take snapshots later.
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, Infrared, GPRS, EDGE, USB, MHL port, DLNA connectivity, and NFC are the connectivity options available on the phone.
The browser on the phone is very good and the large screen makes it easier to view the websites properly. Double tap and pinch to zoom features are available on the phone.
GPS on the phone works very well. We did not have any problems in adding our favourite places or finding the nearest places of interest.
Air View: Air View on the phone is more refined. Pointing to the next song, information preview and speed dialling works very well. Air view can be used from 1cm to the screen. Smart Stay feature locks the phone if the front camera cannot see your face. S voice: S of the inputs but it is not as fast as we would have liked. Google now can also be integrated in to the Google account for easy access.
The phone is priced at INR 31000 (approx., may vary) in the Indian market. The phone is little overpriced just for the size of the screen.
We would rate the phone a 4 out of 5 stars for the slow processor and lack of features.
