The screen of Galaxy Mega 5.8 is a huge 5.8 inch TFT screen. The body is nice, glossy, and good to hold in hand. The build quality of the phone is average and the back cover look like it will break easily. The dimensions of the phone are 83.8x162x9.7 mm and it weighs only 182 grams. The battery of the phone is above average and will last you for day comfortably.
The size of the phone makes it very difficult to operate it with one hand. You will need both of your hands to work in the phone. The TouchWhiz UI takes some time to get used to but once you get used to it, it does make using the phone easier. The phone runs on Jellybean Android software and comes with a 1.4 GHz dual core processor, which seems a little out-dated in the modern age of quad core mobiles. The screen resolution is only 540 x 960 pixels, which does not give it the clear and crisp display that such a large screen demands. The software of the phone is very easy to navigate.
The phone supports both 2G and 3G networks. The call quality is good and we did not see any call drops. The phonebook of the phone is a treat to use. You can get all your contacts and their details at one place.
SMS, Threaded view, MMS, Email and push mail are the features available on the phone. Emails are easy to add and use. You can view attachments comfortably.
File manager on the phone is good and you can easily move around it. We did not have any problem in adding, editing, or deleting files. The photo viewer works well on both landscape and portrait mode. Basic editing options are available. The video player supports WMV, MP4, H.263, H.264, Full HD formats. Video viewing on the screen is good and it gives you many options to sort out your favourite videos.
The music player of the phone is very basic but the sound is good. The UI offers various options of sorting the music to your liking. It even sorts the music according to your moods. The music player supports MP3, eAAC+, FLAC, WAV, AC3 formats which pretty much cover all the formats.
There are two cameras on the phone rear 8MP camera and the front 2.0MP camera. The rear camera has various features such as Auto Focus, Geo-tagging, Touch Focus, Face and Smile Detection, and Image Editor. You can upload photos directly to the social network.
Video camera records @30fps. Full HD recording is easily possible on the phone. Recorded videos turned out to be very good.
Various connectivity options are available on the phone. These include Bluetooth 4.0, USB, NFC, Wi-Fi, 3G, GPRS, and Edge. Wi-Fi tethering is available on the phone.
The tools include alarm, calculator, calendar, clock, Predictive Text Input, Wi-Fi Direct, Video Editor and Voice Input. Other tools can be easily downloaded from the store.
The Android browser is good and the large screen makes internet browsing easier and fun. Various applications include YouTube, Google Talk, Picasa, Google Search, Gmail, and Instant Messaging. You can download various games and apps from the android store and use them comfortably on the phone.
A-GPS, GLONASS, with Google Maps is available on the phone.
There are two distinctive features on the phone are: Multi window feature for easy multitasking. Split and tablet view increase the visibility of the screen and make it appear bigger.
The phone is priced at INR 24000 (approx., may vary) in the Indian market. The lack of a good process and low quality of the screen do not justify the price of the phone.
We would rate the phone a 3.5 stars out of 5.
