The Samsung Galaxy Fame is a quad band, dual-SIM smartphone with 3G network support and is a natural successor to the manufacturer’s successful flagship handset the Galaxy Ace.
In keeping with the rest of the Galaxy family, the phone comes in a candy bar shape, but is available only in white. It measures 113.2 x 61.6 x 11.6 mm and is fairly lightweight at only 120.6 grams. The Fame has a 3.5-inch touch screen display with a 480 x 320 resolution with multi touch capability.
The Galaxy Fame runs the fairly new Jelly Bean Android 4.2 OS on its 1 GHz Processor, which should be quite capable but the measly 512 MB of RAM available on the phone slows it down considerably.
The phone has a voice-activated dial feature and supports both WAV and MP3 ring tones, in addition to a vibrating alert for calls and text messages.
Messaging options are comprehensive, with the messaging interface supporting threaded view and predictive input. It also features MMS, Email and Push Mail, with support for subscription to real time RSS feeds.
The Galaxy Fame supports most video and photo formats, but the low-resolution screen can be uncomfortable for continuous viewing of long video files or movies. Due to the small amount of RAM available, larger files may also load slowly.
The phone’s audio playback quality is good, and the included player supports many formats, including MP3, WAV, eAAC+ and FLAC with a YouTube player thrown in for good measure. The phone also comes with a Stereo FM radio tuner with RDS data capability and FM recording.
The phone has a 5 mega pixel main camera with auto focus and an LED flash at the back of the phone. The camera takes photos up to a resolution of 2592x1944 pixels and features Geo-tagging, touch focus and face detection. There is also a front – facing 0.3 mega pixel VGA camera.
The phone provides for VGA video recording through the main camera at a resolution of 640x480 and a frame rate of 25 frames per second. The result is reasonably detailed video recording with good quality color reproduction.
The phone has Wi-Fi with hotspot capability, as well as USB connectivity supporting USB 4.0 for fast data transfer and synchronization. It also supports Near Field Communication (NFC), allowing it to wirelessly transfer data to nearby smart phones.
There is a range of handy widgets installed on the phone, including Samsung's weather and clock applications, quick notes, and an alarm clock.
Samsung’s stock browser comes installed, with standard features such as support for multiple tabs, incognito mode, and the ability to save pages and read them offline.
The Samsung Galaxy fame is available in India at a retail price of around INR 12000 (approx., may vary). At this price, and with the features available, Samsung is clearly aiming it to be an entry-level android offering.
While the phone has a pleasing and familiar appearance, and is comfortable to hold, the low resolution display and small amount of memory are hard to ignore. However, the price and relatively new operating system is likely to appeal to the buyer with a low budget.
