NuGen AND1 is an entry-level smartphone, which has all the basic features that are expected of a phone to make your life comfortable. It is a highly functional phone and has a very smooth operation.
The phone comes in the touch bar format with 115x63x12.5mm as dimensions and weighs 132 grams. The phone is very comfortable to use in hand and is very lightweight. The phone comes in an elephant black colour, which gives it a very slim look. The build quality of the phone is average. The battery backup of the phone is very good
The phone has a 3.54" HVGA Capacitive Touch Screen that is very comfortable to navigate around. The phone is based on Android 2.3.6 Ginger Bread OS with 1.2 GHz Processor that makes its interface very smooth to use. The Phone has a 2GB of internal memory and an external memory capability of 32GB, which gives you a lot of space to store all the pictures. The 4GB ROM makes it possible to have faster operations on your fingertips. The phone uses Android software, which has lots of useful apps. The phone has an in-built 3D motion sensor which gives it is crisp and clear display when playing games. Voice search feature on the phone makes it easier to search for your favourite apps easier without having to go through the entire menu.
The phone supports dual SIM and dual standby option and switching between the two SIMs is very easy and smooth. The Phonebook entries can save pictures of the contacts and you can have photo contact dialling features. Unfortunately, the phone does not support voice dialling. The call sound quality of the phone is very good even with the inbuilt speakers.
The phone can store up to 500 messages. Apart from this, the phone supports MMS, instant messaging, email and social network services. Typing on the on screen keyboard is very smooth and fast. Message notifications come on the screen and you cannot miss them. Multiple email configuration and Gmail support is available on the phone and it is very easy to set up.
You can store photos, videos, voice recordings, songs etc. in the gallery of the phone. The photo viewer is easy to navigate and you can share photos directly from the photo viewer. The video player is multi format and supports MP4, 3GP, and Rmvb formats. With the ability of 720p playback, the video playing is crisp and smooth.
Music player of the phone can play MP3, MID, AMR, WAV, and AAC formats. The phone has double speakers and you can easily enjoy listening to loud music on the phone. The 3.5 mm audio jack supports all headphones. FM radio of the phone has a wide frequency range and even weak signals can be listened to.
The phone has two cameras, a 5MP camera with 2592x1944px resolution at the back and front digital camera with 640x480px. The back camera has the digital zoom feature and flash. No face detection or geo tagging options are available. The photos are very clear and sharp. The front camera is suitable for Skype calling but the pictures taken from the front camera are not so crisp especially under poor lighting.
The video camera of the phone is good for basic recording and the use of zoom in and zoom out features makes the video look jerky.
The phone supports 5 pin USB, Wi-Fi (WLAN), Bluetooth, and GPRS as connectivity options. The connection and browsing speed of the phone is very good and Bluetooth transfer is very fast.
The phone comes with automatic rotation sensor but we noticed that there is a little lag when you move from portrait to landscape mode and vice a versa. The phone comes loaded with various tools such as scheduler, alarm clock, calendar, notes, to do, and voice memo.
The phone supports WAP browser and you will have access to more than 6lac Android marketplace applications on the phone. The phone has 256 MB of space for Apps and you can have all your favourites stored on the phone easily.
The phone has motion sensor and GPS. Google maps can be used to find you way around the city.
The phone has many distinctive features such as Adobe reader support, Inbuilt 3D games, Office suite support, Auto call recording, Weather report, Market watch and USB tethering support.
The phone is priced at approx. INR 4900 (approx., may vary) in the Indian market, which is a very competitive pricing when, compared to other high-end phones with similar features.
If you can look beyond the brand name then the phone certainly deserves glowing mention for the features and speed. We would give the phone four out of five stars.
