The Nokia 1280 has a simple square design with curved edges. It weighs about 81.9gm with external dimensions of approximately 4.22 by 1.78 by 0.60 inches. These small dimensions make the 1280 quite portable. The phone comes with a 1.36-inch monochrome graphic display with scratch-proof cover. This screen has an output of 96 by 68 pixels or approximately 87-ppi pixel density.
The Nokia 1280 has a user-friendly black and white interface with simple controls. Users can assign shortcut commands to the central joystick enabling quicker access to some menu items. The dust resistant keypad has soft durable keys that make it quite easy to input contact details and send text messages.
The Nokia 1280 is capable of storing up to 500 contact details in the phonebook. The call log history shows the last 20 calls dialled, 20 calls received, and 20 missed calls.
The 1280 Nokia phone can send and receive text messages only. It has predictive text input that enables fast text messaging on the go. However, the phone does not support Email Services due to lack of GPRS.
The 1280 gallery stores about 32 polyphonic ringtones for call and SMS alerts. Users may also obtain one or two MP3 ringtones from their network provider at premium rates. This phone does not have a camera and so there is no inbuilt photo viewer or video player.
The Nokia 1280 comes with a built-in FM radio that is accessible using a compatible headset. Users can listen to different radio stations by connecting 3.5mm audio jack headsets or earphones to the phone. However, the 1280 does not have a music player.

Its only distinctive feature is the built-in flashlight that may come in handy when owners lose something outdoors in the dark.

The Nokia 1280 is suitable for users who are simply content with making calls, sending and receiving text messages. It is a handy cell phone for remote regions with limited electricity lines. Its Li-Ion Nokia battery offers up to 8hrs 30 min talk time, and can last for five days without the need for recharging.
