Released in February 2013, the Micromax A89 Ninja is a yet another entry level Android Smartphone from Micromax. The handset has Dual SIM capability.
The handset comes with a WVGA (480x800) 3.97-inches (marketed as 4-inch) display with 262k colours. It features Android 4.0 (also called Ice Cream Sandwich) and bar form factor. It has a Ninja design pattern characterized by curvy edges.
The phone has a two-colour theme going. As such, its sides are silver in colour while the rest of its body is black in colour. The G-sensor, light, and proximity sensors are on the left hand side. The front panel has three touch buttons. There is an ‘in-call’ speaker at the top.
The phone dialler allows users to make calls directly from any of the two SIM cards. While SIM 1 is calling, SIM 2 call buttons will be active and on the storage front, its phonebook can hold unlimited entries.
The handset supports MMS, SMS (threaded view), Email, and IM.
Supported video formats are MP4, 3GP, WMV, H.264, and H.263. The video player plays 720p videos smoothly with loud and clear speaker sound.
Supported music formats of the media player are MP3, AAC, WMA, MID, WAV. The handset also has an FM radio.
The handset only has one camera on the rear side. The 3.15 MP, 2048x1536 pixels camera is fixed focus (no zoom available). The camera is sans flash.
The video camera is the phone’s weakest link. It is only capable of recording videos at a maximum of 640×480 pixels. The handset is capable of 720p video playback.
The different connectivity options are Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), mini USB, GPRS, 2G, 3G, Bluetooth v2.1, 3.5 mm jack, GPS, and EDGE.
As is the case with other Micromax Smartphones, users expect calendar, task list, file manager, alarm, dictionary, and converter, among other productivity apps.
The phone, as is the case with comparable Micromax smartphones, comes preloaded with M! Zone+, Hook up, M! store, M! live, Darkman, and Fruit devil. The 4-inch screen allows for a great browsing experience.
The Micromax A89 Ninja supports GPS.
Using a microSD care, one can expand the phone’s storage capacity up to 32GB.
With all the features, INR 6190 (approx., may vary) is a fair price. The document viewer, photo viewer/editor, voice memo/dial, predictive text input features also offer value for money.
Since the Micromax A89 Ninja does not feature a front-facing secondary camera, it does not support video calls, which is not a good thing for a Smartphone. Overall, while the one-year manufacturer warranty and the after sales service are welcome, the handset is most suitable for people who intend to use the phone to receive calls and write messages since it lacks most of the features associated with high-end Smartphones. The talk time is an impressive 4 hours.
