Lava Iris 458Q is a budget smartphone by the Indian manufacturer.
The look and feel of the phone is that of a standard candy bar phone. The back cover of the phone is a little hard to take off but once you have set it up with SIM and memory card you don’t have to take it out again and again. The phones dimensions are 133.5 x 67 x 11.9 mm, that places it in a very comfortable place when it comes to comparing the dimensions of a phone. The phone feels very comfortable in hand and does not slip. The battery of the phone lasted for about 10 hours when using in 3G mode but if you are using the browser then it drains very fast.
The phone comes with an Android Jellybean OS and a Mediatek quad core processor (1.2 GHz). The combination of the two makes the phone a very good buy in the price range. The UI of the phone is very easy to understand, customize and use. There are not many features that come with the phone and you have to use the Android market place to set it up. The phone has a large 4.5-inch screen with FWVGA screen with 480x854 resolutions. The screen does not work well in sunlight and from larger viewing angles but if you are holding the phone in your hand and you are inside you will enjoy the screen quality. The capacitive touch buttons at the bottom of the screen do not illuminate in the dark. The phone has 512 MB of RAM and comes with 4GB of internal storage (>2GB of which is available for users). The memory can be further extended up to 32GB using the micro SD card slot.
The phone supports both 2G and 3G GSM functions. Dual SIM feature is very convenient to use. The phone book entries are unlimited and you can integrate social networking easily. The call quality is good in both the modes.
Messaging features on the phone include MMS, SMS, and IM and email features include POP, SMTP, Push mail and Gmail. The screen keyboard is very convenient to use when writing messages or typing long emails.
The photo viewer of the phone comes with all basic editing options, which you can easily use. The video player plays all video formats and remembers your favourites.
Music player on the phone is average and we did not particularly enjoy listening to music over it. The headphone that comes with the set are of average quality and the speaker volume is not satisfactory. The FM radio is the standard one and scans quite easily.
The phone comes with an 8MP rear camera with face detection, auto focus, panorama and zoom. The flash is standard LED flash. The photos that come out of the camera are quite good in ambient lighting. In dark mode, the camera does not work very well. Also in panorama mode, the stitching is not very smooth. The front camera of the phone is a standard VGA camera suitable for video calling and chats.
The phone is capable of 720p HD video recording. The videos that we recorded on the phone looked like home videos and were not very good. If you shift from one frame to another quickly then the camera takes some time to focus.
The connectivity options on the phone include 3G, GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and USB. The Wi-Fi connectivity is good even when you are away from the modem/router.
Clock, alarm, calendar, calculator are the tools available on the device.
Android browser and opera mini browser are present on the phone. The browsers are easy to navigate. However, the phone battery drains quite quickly if you have been using the browser for some time. Some preloaded applications include Saavn, Cricket Fever, PayTM, and Cosmopolitan life style, WeChat, Google Play and MX Player
The phone supports A-GPS and comes preloaded with Google Maps. The maps are good and easy to use.
The phone comes preloaded with two games namely Cricket fever and NFS shift. Both the games play well on the phone but if you want to play any high end games like Asphalt or NFS higher versions then the phone lags horribly.
The phone is priced at INR 8500 (approx., may vary) in the Indian Market. The phone is priced very less than other competitors selling quad core processor phones are.
