Karbonn S2 Titanium is another one of the simple but still smart phones from Karbonn. Some have also gone ahead and called it a combination of phone and tablet i.e. the phablet.
The phone’s design is what you would expect from an Android Phone. The body is curved and smooth, the grip on the phone is comfortable, and the screen is large enough to browse or watch through anything. The phone is available in black and white colours. The phone’s dimensions are 74x145x9.9 mm and the phone's weight is 186 grams, which is much more than other similar phones in the market. The phone’s battery lasts for 7 hours on 3G operation, which we feel, is a very less life for a phablet.
The phone comes with Android Jellybean OS and 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor that gives it a very fast speed and an intuitive UI. The phone’s screen is 5 inch TFT capacitive touch screen and the home, back and call buttons are at the bottom of the screen and do not hinder the view. The phone has an internal memory of 4GB, which means that the phone does not slow down even in multiple operations. The whole screen is clutter free and some of the applications can be accessed from the lock screen easily. The screen works well in sunlight but the viewing angle is not very wide and you might have some problem with it.
The phone supports Dual SIM operations and 2G and 3G networks. The switching between the two is easy and simple. The phonebook has the capacity of unlimited entries and you can integrate your social network contact to it.
SMS, MMS, Email, Push Email, IM, and SNS are the messaging features you can use. You can use the threaded SMS view to see the whole conversation.
The manufacturers have kept the gallery of the phone very simple. The photo viewer is simple to use and has all the usual editing features. It is easy to upload to social networks and even share pictures over Bluetooth. The video player also does not through any surprises. It can play all video formats. When switching between portrait and landscape mode when playing the video makes the screen go blank for a fraction of a second but you will hardly notice it.
Music out of the earphone is not so good but through the phone’s loudspeaker, you can enjoy the music if you are in a room. The player supports all popular music formats. The FM radio of the phone is good but not great.
The phone has an 8MP camera with Auto Focus, Panorama Mode, Multi Angle Shots, Continuous Multi Shots, Face Detection, Smile Detection, and built in Image Editor. The images are sharp and the auto focus makes it easy to take your favourite photos. The front camera is 2MP and good enough for taking pictures and video chat plus call.
The camera has an LED flash but still the video recording is not good in dark areas but still it is good for you to want to upload the videos the YouTube.
Connectivity options on the phone include Bluetooth, Edge, 3G, and Wi-Fi. We did not have any problem in using either of the options at any times.
When it comes to tools, the phone has all the basic ones and the company apps. The additional tools include Day Dream, More Detailed Notifications, Knowledge Graph, Application Backup, Scheduled Backup, Outlook Emails, Text-to-Speech, Voice Typing, and Voice Search.
Browser is good but the zoom function is not very handy. The applications on the phone include Google Play, YouTube, Whatsapp, Facebook, Gmail, Google Talk, Google+, TOI, ET, Flipboard, News and Weather, Kingsoft Office, PoPi, and UC Browser.
The phone has A-GPS and comes preloaded with Google Maps. Google Maps are good to respond and even the voice integration works well.
The phone is priced at INR 10500 (approx., may vary) in the Indian market. The phone of the price feels just right for the features and performance that it offers.
The phone does not impress us much with the lack of great viewing angle. We would rate the phone a 3.7 stars out of 5.
