The budget-friendly Karbonn A18 is a slab style device that has a large 4.3 inch capacitive touchscreen. That is a large size for a device in this category. There is definitely some weight to the device that has a glossy black plastic battery cover that feels a bit flimsy. The matte finish has a solid build quality overall.
Running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the Karbonn A18 is very nice to have out of the box. Most budget Android smartphones do not have the newer operating system installed without the help of a software update. It runs on stock Android so there is no third party skins or bloat ware floating around.
MOV, AVI, VOB, DAT, MPEG, MP4, 3GP, FLV, and WMV video formats are all supported by the Karbonn A18. Video quality is fairly good on the device in terms the resolution but the sound is average.
Support for MP3 files allows you to listen to your music on the Karbonn A18. The audio turns out only 'ok' when you are listening to your tunes. Unfortunately, Karbonn did not include an FM radio on this device.
Equipped with a 5MP Auto Focus camera with an LED flash, you will get the same type of quality photos as the original HTC Desire. There is also a 1.3MP front camera to make video calls.
Videos will turn out in good quality in areas where there is a good level of light. In darker areas, the video will not perform up to par. The on-board memory is adequate, but you can also expand it to up to 32 GB with the help of a microSD card.
There are a variety of connectivity options on the Karbonn A18. There is a Dual SIM option to connect those who may need two SIM cards for work and personal purposes. In addition, GSM 900 and 1800 and UMTS 2100 are the supported bands. GPRS and EDGE technology will keep you connected on a 2G network and a 3G option, where available is also part of the experience. You can connect the device to others using the Bluetooth function or USB port on the device.
A WAP browser allows you to access the web on the device. There are also some pre-installed applications on the device including Facebook, Google Currents, Twitter, Yahoo Messenger, Whatsapp, Karbonn Smart, Angry Birds, and Kingsoft Office.
GPS support is available via A-GPS with Google Maps. The reliability of Google Maps makes it a nice feature to have on the device.
To help conserve the battery life, the Karbonn A18 has a Proximity and Light sensor.
Priced at Rs. 9790 (approx.), the Karbonn A18 has some great features for the price.
The Karbonn A18 is a very nice device for the price. Most budget smartphones lack some decent features. This device comes with a fast 1 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, and an adequate 5 MP camera. The Karbonn A18 is recommended for users looking for a budget-friendly device that has the features that will offer you some mid-level functionality.
