Slim, sleek and with a bold design is how we would describe Huawei Ascent Y300 phone on the first look. The phone is much better in terms of features and speed than its counterparts are. The phone has taken the smartphone world by storm.
The phone has a futuristic design, which is very attractive. The phone has an impressive four-inch screen, which makes it possible for you to read your emails on a page. However, the screen gets the fingerprint imprints too quickly and you have to continuously keep wiping it to keep it clean. With the packed features, the phone weighs only 130 grams, with a dimension of 63.8x124.5x11.2 mm. It is easy to hold in hand and does not slip from the grip. The phone has an impressive battery life of 5 hours of talk time in 2G and 3G. The phone is available in black and white colours, which have a smooth finish.
The phone is a touch screen phone and has a very quick response to touch. We did not notice any lag in operations even after long use. The phone has call connect and disconnect and home button on the screen. The phone’s processor is 1 GHz Qualcomm ARM Cortex-A5 Dual Core processor that is supported by 512 MB of RAM, 394 of which is available for use. The screen has a resolution of 480x800 pixels with TFT LCD screen. The colour depth of 16M gives the screen sharper and vivid display. The phone is very easy to use and you can access all the functions easily. The phone comes with advanced Huawei’s Emotion UI, which is a delight to use. However, the screen does not have a screen protector and therefore is susceptible to scratches but the glass is fairly scratch resistant. The phones support the multi touch of up to 5 fingers. Jellybean Android OS allow you a smooth interface and switching between profiles. Customization is fairly simple and with loads of options. Ambient light sensor ensures that you get to see the screen properly every time.
The phone supports both 2G and 3G networks. However, you might find doing 3G video calling a little cumbersome, as the front camera of the phone does not support operator based video calls. The phone catches signal even when the signal a week and calls are smooth. Call voice quality is very good and clear at both earphone and hands free modes. The phone has 1GB of internal memory and an extendable memory up to 32 GB, which gives you virtually unlimited phonebook storage space. The phone has a very sensitive proximity sensor, which is very effective during calls.
The phone supports SMS, MMS, Push mail, Email and IM options and T9 predictive text input. Google mail is pre-installed and you can customize any other push mail with ease. The Message storage capacity depends on the storage space with option to store in phone or on the memory card.
Gallery of the phone saves your photos, videos, songs, favourite radio channels, documents and other preferences. The photo viewer comes with photo editing option so that you can have the pictures the way you want. Video player of the phone is very smart. Even after 2 hours of playing, we did not notice any lag in the video. The player supports H.263, H.264, MPEG-4, 3GP, OGG formats. It formats it does not support and be played in other applications such as the VLC player.
The FM radio sound quality is good. The music player supports MP3, MIDI, eAAC+, WAV formats. However, the sound from the speaker is very low. If the phone is in one room and you are in other room you will not even hear the phone ringing even when there are no other sounds. The earphones that come in the box are not of so good quality.
For the photographer in you the phone as a 5 MP back camera and 0.3 MP front camera. The camera comes with autofocus and digital zoom. The pictures have a resolution of 2560x1920 pixels and the camera has an inbuilt flash also. The image quality is good in daylight but in the might with flash, the photos have a yellow tint. The capture format is .jpg. The auto focus feature of the camera is not good and often gives blurry pictures. The front camera of the phone is good for Skype and other video calling but not for taking pictures.
The phone’s video camera can record the videos of 854x480 resolutions. Even at 720p, we did not notice any lag or shutter. We feel that the video recording could have been better considering the hardware the phone has.
You have a multitude of connectivity options with this phone. GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi, USB and Bluetooth are connection options. The phone supports the speeds of HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA, 5.76 Mbps. Wi-Fi and internet are very fast but the phones Wi-Fi only works if you are within the 10-meter distance for the modem. The phone can be used as a hotspot for Wi-Fi connections.
All Backup, Wi-Fi Manager, Huawei IME, File Manager, Weather Clock, Huawei Music, Contacts Import, Power Saving Mode, Huawei Widget, Emotion UI 1.0DLNA along with the calendar, alarm clock, calculator, and voice mail are some of the utility tools available on the phone.
The phone supports WAP and HTML browsers. Google applications such as the Google search, Google Talk, Google News and Weather, YouTube, Play Store, Widget, Google Search by Voice, Gmail, Google Play, Facebook and Twitter are preinstalled on the phone.
The phone supports A-GPS with Google maps. However, the phone is missing the digital compass but the accelerometer is quite good. We feel that a digital compass would have added more value to it.
The phone has a built in torch, which uses the flash light. The phone has a built in smart tutorial, which helps the entry-level users to explore all the features of the phone.
The phone is comfortable priced at under INR 8000 (approx., may vary) in the Indian market, which is the best pricing of such a powerful phone. Huawei is the leading communication company in the world and therefore class and quality for a good value of money is what Y300 phone has.
Comparing the price with the hardware on the phone, we would give the phone 4.5 stars out of 5. The camera features and GPS of the phone could have been better.
