HTC EVO 4G is a large smartphone by any standards. It has a very fast processor, which literally brings up things with a tap of fingertips.
The phone has a smooth curved edge design. The phone is definitely larger and wider than an average phone. The size of the phone is 122 x 66 x 13 mm and weighs 170grams. The size and weight of the phone does not make it comfortable to use for a long period of time. Even talking on the phone for longer durations makes it uncomfortable to hold and you want to shift hands. The build of the phone is of excellent and the body does not scratch easily. The screen is a solid TFT capacitive screen with touch button at the bottom. There is a lot of light leakage from the bottom of the screen. The phone has red interiors and the micro SD card is hidden at the bottom. The phone’s battery is very good and lasts for about 6 hours with rigorous use.
The phone has a 480 x 800 pixels 4.3-inch screen, which is wide enough to browse through websites, read book and play high-powered games easily. You can watch whole movies on the screen without too much of strain. The phone’s menu is very easy to use. The phone has a 1 GHz processor, runs on Android OS, v2.1 Éclair, and can be upgraded to Gingerbread. The phone has 512MB of RAM and the memory can be extended up to 8GB. The screen keyboards are comfortable to use. You are less likely to tap at a wrong place with the large screen size. The proximity and accelerometer sensors are very effective and we did not experience any accidental screen pressing when on calls.
The phone runs on both 2G and 3G networks. The phone’s phonebook is loaded with features such as picture calling, voice dialling, integrating social media contacts. The voice calls quality when you are in the room is very refined and superb but if you make a call in a crowded or noisy area then there is lot of background noise on the phone.
Threaded message view, SMS, MMS, Email, Push email , instant messaging and social media integration are available on the phone.
The photos on the phone appear clear and sharp. The photo viewer can be used to crop, edit, and give special effects on the phone. The video player of the phone plays videos without lag and plays all the standard video formats.
Entertainment wise the phone excels in most features. The music player is fully featured and plays AAC and MP3 formats. The sound is clear and crisp even on the loudspeaker. The FM radio quality is good but you have to attach the headphones to listen to FM.
The phone has an excellent 8MP camera with autofocus, zoom, and flash features. You can add various features such as Greyscale, sepia etc. on the photos. The camera takes photos without and lags and even with autofocus, the camera performance is superb. The phone does not have a dedicated camera button, which is a minus for the phone. The front camera of the phone is 1.3Mp and makes calling through Skype and 3G very easy and a pleasure to do.
The video camera of phone is again very crisp and records 720p videos. The video quality is quite good and you can quickly upload it on social networking sites. The phone comes with a kickstand that makes viewing videos a pleasure to see without holding the phone in your hand
The connectivity options on the phone include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, and HDMI.
The phone comes with a host of tools such as voice memo, alarm, calendar, calculator, office applications. Loads of applications can be downloaded from the market place as required.
Web browsing is a treat on the phone. The connectivity speed of the phone is very good and the browser supports HTML and flash. The apps include Facebook, Twitter, Google, Gmail, YouTube, Flickr, Google Talk, and Picasa.
Google Maps on the phone latches very quickly because of the inbuilt GPS. The GPS is fine and allows operations even in remote areas.
The phone is priced at INR 15000 (approx., may vary) in the Indian market. The speed and features of the phone justify the price.
The phone has many good features and has only two things, which we did not like which include the large size and the poor voice (call) quality on the phone.
