For the price point, the G1 GPAD holds great promise. It is based on the ICS OS and is powered by a dual core A9 Cortex. That is a powerful processor and its one of the latest in the series that will surely last for some time to come. This is a phone that deserves to be called as a phone of the new generation if all you need is a portable entertainment unit without the need to be on a super speed broadband connection.
The GPAD rides on the 2G network. Yes that makes it a little dated, but not everyone needs a 3 or 4 G network, and those can get expensive. The 2G is a simple solution to check emails, make and take calls and it’s just a simple communication tool. Higher broadband speeds get expensive and it’s not always worth it. The GPAD also has the capability of using two SIMs simultaneously. Many of us these days need this functionality and the GPAD allows smooth transition between the two. For those who do need the 3G ability, the GPAD does allow that as well and for something that is at this price point the value proposition is unparalleled.
The problem with major smartphones these days is that they are becoming too clunky. Size is beginning to get out of hand, but for those of you who still appreciate the small niceties in life it is an amazing find. At only 10.2 mm thick it’s easy to slide in and out of the pocket. It’s only 135mm long and 78 mm wide. That is tiny, so coupled with the image resolution; the screen projects a fantastic optical density. The screen is also touch sensitive and uses finger scrolling and swiping on its capacitive touch layer.
There are a few ways one can get online when needed, especially with the double SIM option. The first is with GPRS and the other is with EDGE. For e-mail it’s great.
The 5 inch display sports a capacitive finger touch that responds seamlessly on account of the high powered CPU, the signals are processed in real time without any delay and the result is magnificent. The phone comes with two cameras. The back camera is an 8 MP camera with an LED flash for those low-light situations. The front-facing camera makes it possible for self-portraits and is one that will be used more than you realize. If you are into music, be it classical western or something from Ravi Shankar, the acoustics emanating from the SRS TruMedia 3D stereo surround speakers will blow your mind. Just be kind to your fellow commuters and play it a little louder so they don’t have to strain to hear what you’re listening to. The true shining star in the package is the AMD A9 Cortex dual core CPU. It is the reason your new phone can do all the things it can. High speed combined with powerful image processing makes it a true companion wherever you venture in your day.
